Creating griefstrickenbook.com: a Website for Hope and Healing
When Christine Dowd, a dedicated special education teacher from Central Massachusetts, approached me, she wanted to create a digital home for her powerful memoir, Grief Stricken, and a space where readers could navigate their emotional journeys together.

Christine’s healing process has been deeply supported by her beloved Goldendoodle, Milo, whose companionship offered comfort during her grieving periods. This personal journey detailed how she coped with the tragic and unexpected loss of her mother and has been enriched by her experiences with Milo and her other pets. This story became the beating heart of our collaboration.
Building a Platform for Connection
Christine’s passion for trauma-informed care stems from her journey through grief after the sudden passing of her mother. Writing Grief Stricken was both a cathartic and courageous act, and Christine knew her website needed to reflect that same blend of vulnerability and resilience. This vision set the stage for our collaboration.
Although she had attempted to build a WordPress site a year earlier, the project had overwhelmed her. With her book launch just weeks away, Christine turned to me for help.
The Challenge: Balancing Timelines and Tone

Creating a website that balanced functionality, aesthetic appeal, and a tight timeline required a collaborative approach. Clients often know what they want but find it challenging to put it into words.
We start with my initial questionnaire to help bridge this gap. It asks about the feeling we want visitors to have when visiting the site. Then I use that, and existing branding when available as a foundation.
For Christine’s design, we experimented with several color combinations and contrasted a more traditional white background with the dark tones Christine ultimately favored.
This back-and-forth collaboration is critically important during the design process, allowing us to refine and bring the client’s vision to life in an authentic and impactful way.
Key Features and Design Highlights
Christine’s website design was inspired by the aesthetic of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department album collection. This unique style heavily influenced our choices, blending elements of vintage charm with the darker tones of her memoir, Grief Stricken. Balancing the album’s muted, textured palette with the grays and blacks of Christine’s book cover required some experimentation, but we achieved harmony through intentional color selection and thoughtful design touches.
To enhance this aesthetic, we added colors and textures
- Backgrounds: A clean, soft white paired with a warm neutral to provide a sense of lightness and openness.
- Accent Colors: A soothing light blue complemented by a deeper blue-gray to add depth and contrast.
- Charcoal Details: A grounding charcoal shade for text and strong elements, tying everything together.
- Textures: We incorporated a subtle crinkled paper texture over the light blue accents, nodding to the aged, literary aesthetic of The Tortured Poets Department. This detail also symbolizes the imperfect yet enduring journey through grief—a nod to Christine’s story of resilience. Just as worn pages of a journal hold raw and intimate reflections, this texture brings an emotional and tactile quality to the design.
The combination of colors and textures created a cohesive design that honors the introspective nature of Christine’s book and the timeless, creative feel of the album art.

Website Features for Growth
Christine’s new website is more than just a home for her book—it provides the basis for future growth. Key design and technical features include:

- Blog Integration: An easy-to-manage WordPress blog encourages Christine’s twice-monthly posts, fostering ongoing reader engagement.
- Scalability for Future Projects: The site is prepared to grow with Christine’s initiatives, whether that includes a private forum, community group, or additional resources.
The Results: A Strong Foundation
While her blog readership is still growing, the site provides her the tools and platform to share her voice and connect with her audience. By focusing on thoughtful design and scalable functionality, the website is well-positioned to support her as she builds a community around her memoir and the themes it explores.
“What sets Jane apart is her passion for her work. She enthusiastically approached every task and genuinely wanted to help me achieve my goals. This dedication is evident in the exceptional quality of her work and the positive impact it has had on my business. I can now write freely, and update my blog anytime, knowing that Jane is there to support me whenever I need her.” -Christine Dowd

A Personal Reflection
Working with Christine on this project was a truly enriching experience. Her passion for creating a space that fosters connection and healing was inspiring, and it pushed me to think creatively about how design can reflect deeply personal stories.
I was moved by the themes Christine shared during our collaboration—grief, resilience, and hope—and worked to weave those emotions into every aspect of the site. It’s rewarding to know that this digital space now offers her readers a place to navigate their journeys just as she envisioned.
Helping Christine bring her vision to life reminded me of the power of design to support meaningful connections, even in the most challenging of times.
